NETS-T

As part of my latest class Integrating Technology Across the Content Areas I had to look into International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and National Education Technology Standards (NETS). I have know about ISTE for a while through my colleagues and this summer I had the chance to go to their national conference here in Denver. There I learned more about their NETS program and how they set standards for different levels. As part of my class I have chosen two NETS for teachers that I would like to advance my skills in. The first NET-T I choose was #1 facilitate and inspire student learning and creativity and the second was #5 engage in professional growth and leadership (ISTE.org, 2010).
To promote my learning in these NETS-T I will follow the Goal Action Monitor Evaluate method (Cennamo, 2010). My goal will be to find new technologies to use in my classroom to promote creativity and my second goal is to take more of an active role in my school's Technology Committee. My action to achieve both of these goals will be to take part in several webinars to find new ideas to use. Next I will monitor my goals by doing monthly self reviews. Lastly I will evaluate these goals by using my school's librarian to pitch my ideas to. If they are good she will let me know.
In all taking part in webinars will help me become a better teacher by fostering creativity and help my school by bringing new ideas to our Technology Committee.

  1. Luke,
I think that is a great idea to bounce your ideas off of your school's librarian. Usually librarians have so much useful knowledge and are very helpful. How did you get involved in attending the NETS-T seminars?

  2. Luke,
How will you evaluate yourself in these self-reviews? Perhaps you could also include the Librarian in the evaluation as he/she is part of your research.

  3. Luke -
What are some current technologies you have tried to use with yor students? Are there any you could improve on or modify to be better? What content area will you be looking at for the webinars - or is it more just for tools in the toolbelt? Are you going to evaluate whether or not you have learned new things only or whether or not you have applied them as well?
Sorry about all the questions; I've been asking myself these a lot lately too.

    Best regards,
    Beth

  4. Luke,
Where do find the webinars? I would love to get into some of those. I do have a question. What will your self reviews be like? How will you do that? I am just being curious because you could have some good ideas for me to use to review myself. I did want to ask you, too, what your school's Technology Committee does and who is a part of it? It sounds like it could be a good entity to have. You have some great ideas.

  5. Scott, Jacqueline, Beth and Tami,

Thank you all for your comments. I am overwhelmed that so many of you responded to me. I first got interested in ISTE because of some fellow teachers and that their national conference was coming to my hometown.
It is a great idea to include my librarian in the evaluation process because she is great with technology. Then i will do self reviews that I always do at the end of my 8 week classes. I usually do informal surveying of my classes at the end to see what they think worked or didn't work.
Technologies I have been using a lot are Google Docs and open source downloads. Whenever I find something new that i like I always find some way to sneak it into my lessons even if its not the best fit. Just showing the tech to the kids often peaks their interest and they want to use it too.
The tech committee at my school is a body that does our grant writing for technology and is in charge of the tech budget, and tech trainings. Our principal is not that tech savy so she made the committee to help her out with things she can't do herself.
I hope I answered all your questions. You all had a lot!

    Luke
